School Days Off

Investigate American life during the Cold War by taking a deep look at 1950s and 1960s media. Study and discuss Life magazines and other primary and secondary sources from the era. Students will hone their media literacy and critical thinking skills and play a couple games as they learn about the Cold War.

Tour the ancient world as you play a variety of games from over a thousand years ago and compare them to popular modern games.

Play a variety of vintage and modern board games based around real history. Explore the origins of Monopoly, cure the 1918 flu pandemic with a World War I-themed version of Pandemic, and more.

Learn the basics of hand-sewing as you make a pioneer pillow and add decorative flair like a button or embroidered designs.

Students will brainstorm ideas to improve their local community. Give a townhall presentation to discuss and refine your idea with your constituents. Then give a final campaign speech before participating in an election and a caucus. Students will then collaboratively create an advocacy road map for engaging in the civic process.

Explore a different era of art history each day. Make your own art as you recreate famous works and practice techniques pioneered by important artists, all while learning how art informs our understanding of history.

Unearth hidden secrets in the dirt and learn what stories objects can tell. Campers will run experiments and analyze data to recreate the past and solve an archaeological mystery.

Let your young artist enjoy the holiday break as they dive into the arts. Campers join our specialists in dance, theatre, music, circus, visual & culinary arts to experience fun and creativity. For an additional fee, extended care opportunities are also available.

Kids can spend their day off in the fresh air at Emily Oaks, exploring the natural world, going on adventures in the woodland and around the pond, and finding wonders and treasures. The class will take place outdoors.

The first Wednesday of the month is an early dismissal for District 65 schools. We will head to the nature center for an afternoon of hikes, exploration, crafts, and games. Transportation provided for Walker Elementary students. The class will take place outdoors. Note: October’s Day off is a full day!

Winter is a wonderful time to get outside and explore nature! Each day your child will spend time exploring and learning new outdoor skills. Activities also include games, hiking, and related craft projects. For children in grades 1-5. No camp on New Year’s Day.

Go on a Safari adventure with Young Rembrandts! We will explore the exciting land and many animals that inhabit Africa. We will draw a variety of animals in various scenes with different media. To keep things exciting, we will explore the African Safari through the fun technique of cartoon as well. We will even challenge our artistic talents by creating 2 large scenes one in a graphic style filled with a variety of animals and another focusing on the twists and turns of an African snake completed with pastel chalks. Our exploration through Africa allows for a bounty of adventure and creativity.

Learn the basics of cartooning and create your own characters in this three-day holiday class! Each day students will learn techniques used in cartooning. Subjects like characteristics, features, exaggeration, action, and personification will contribute to your child’s artistic advancement! Campers are introduced to the fundamentals of sports including basketball, floor hockey, football, kickball, soccer, t-ball and other sports and group games. The program provides an opportunity for each child to develop motor skills and nurture his/her growth socially and emotionally through teamwork and good sportsmanship. All campers will receive a camp t-shirt. Campers should bring a snack and water bottle each day.

Participants receive instruction on all major volleyball skills including serving, passing, setting and attacking through fun and active drills. In addition to these fundamentals campers are introduced to advanced skills including, offense, defense, and developing specific positions. Daily scrimmages allow players to use these skills in a game environment.

These half-day camps are designed to transition youth players to the next level. Through specifically designed small-sided games and scrimmages, coaches work with each player to improve his or her individual skills. Each camp session focuses on precision passing, targeted shooting and intermediate to advanced ball control techniques.

This camp focuses on a variety of sports including flag football, basketball, baseball, kickball, soccer, capture the flag, and other group games. Each day camper’s focus on skill development and fundamentals for each respective sport, followed by game play. Coaches ensure a fun and energetic atmosphere while promoting teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Campers improve their basketball fundamentals, learn advanced skills, and enhance their teamwork. Dribbling, passing, rebounding, shooting and defense skills are developed. Campers are divided into groups based on age, size and ability.

Campers will learn basketball's fundamentals, including dribbling, shooting, ball handling, one-on-one moves, and other offensive and defensive skills. Fun & competitive drills will all be executed at game speed. Staff members include current and former high school and collegiate players.

Enjoy a day off of school with friends at the Oakton Community Center with a local field trip and other fun activities like arts and crafts, games and outdoor play. Participants need to bring a re-fillable water bottle, lunch and snack each day. Registration deadline is one week in advance.
