The Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame recently announced two new player inductees for 2008, including goalie Steve Glickman, the Skatium Ice Arena’s director of hockey.

The "players" category, now at 15 members, also includes Chris Chelios and Stan Mikita. The 2008 group, which honors players, builders and officials, will be recognized at the fourth annual induction dinner on Sunday, Jan. 25 in Elk Grove Village.

The district’s Skatium Ice Arena helped launch Glickman’s youth career in 1973, when he played in the facility’s first league and then on their first travel team as a Pee Wee. He went on to play AAA youth hockey with the Chicago Minor Hawks in 1977.

As a junior in high school, Glickman was invited and tried out for the 1980 Olympic Hockey team. He then played junior hockey in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in 1981, and college hockey at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where his team won the NAIA College Division II Championship in 1982. In 1988 he came out of a five-year retirement and played in the pre-season for the Milwaukee Admirals of the International Hockey League (then the minor league affiliate for the Vancouver Canucks).

Currently the head coach of the Maine Township high school team, Glickman has coached and instructed youth, high school and major junior hockey throughout the United States and Canada for more than 25 years. He led the Loyola Academy Maroon team to an Illinois state championship in 2003, and the school’s junior varsity team to a state title in 1992. Glickman also has coached the country’s top 14- to 16-year-olds at the prestigious USA Hockey National Development Camp — once in 2004, and again in 2007.

2013 Update: In 2013, Glickman coached Team USA's 40-and-over squad at the Maccabiah Games in Israel, upsetting the Russians and Canadians to win the gold medal.
