After reviewing the results of a commissioned survey of Skokie Park District registered voters and listening to public comments, the Skokie Park District board of commissioners last night at their regular monthly meeting, voted 5-0 to place the district’s proposed $53 million, 20-year bond referendum on the November 3, 2026 general election ballot, for the improvement of Sports Park East and the development of a new Channelside Park South. 

The survey responses indicated that 54 percent of those completing the survey responded either “decidedly yes” or “probably yes” to voting for the referendum. If the referendum passes in November, work on the project would likely begin in spring 2027. Optimistically, the estimated completion date would be 18-24 months later.  

The board was also urged during the public comment segment of the meeting to consider baseball fields as part of the redevelopment of Sports Park East, an option that will be considered.  

The project would transform an undeveloped asphalt site into Channelside Park South and improve Skokie Sports Park and Sports Park East, enhancing indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities while strengthening connections between both parks and the North Shore Channel Trail. 

Channelside Park South’s vibrant waterfront destination would feature expansive green space, scenic paths, and natural landscapes; accessible playground and outdoor fitness equipment; a renovated multipurpose facility; and a bandshell and event lawn. 

Updating Skokie Sports Park and Sports Park East would expand and improve year-round recreation, sports, and fitness opportunities for all ages, including a new recreation center with indoor courts, upgraded athletic fields with new sports lighting and irrigation, a walking path with native plantings and other outdoor amenities.
