Once part of shallow Beaver Lake (drained in the 1920s), Kankakee Sands is an 8,000-acre mosaic of prairie and wetland remnants and restorations managed by The Nature Conservancy. Trails lead through oak savanna and short grass prairie, atop a sand dune, and to overlooks for views of a bison herd and wetland birds. Plan to hike four miles on easy trails. Bring a picnic lunch; van transportation provided.
